Mayakoba
Mayakoba is the largest tourism complex to be constructed in
Quintana Roo. With a total of 1600 acres, the plan contemplates
the construction of six hotels 5.5 miles from Playa del
Carmen during the next five years. The offering of villas and
condominiums represents between five thousand and seven
thousand rooms for the Riviera Maya. Categorized as one of
the best developments at the international level the initial
investment is $850 million of a total of $1.375 billion that the
project will cost. Approximately 1,500 permanent jobs will be
created during the first phase, and when the six hotels are in
operation another 1,500 direct jobs will be created along with
3,000 indirect jobs.
The Greg Norman golf course design firm has been the creador of the eighteen-hole course with which the
Spanish investors of the Obrascon Huarte Lain (OHL) group have crowned the the Mayakoba tourism complex.
The first hotel, the Fairmont Mayakoba, will open its doors in Spring, 2006, with a total of 401 rooms and 50
villas. The second hotel will be part of the Rosewood chain and will have 120 rooms. The remaining hotels will
include one from the Kor chain, the Singing House, and an exclusive and luxurious resort of the Banyan Tree
chain, and will be completed in 2007. The second phase of the Mayakoba project will be completed in 2012,
consisting of a great shopping mall and three thousand more villas on the remaining 988 acres.
