Infrastructure
Public service infrastucture is increasing fifty percent in Cancún and twenty-five percent in Playa del Carmen
based on their master plans. In Playa del Carmen, Superblock 53 has been designated for government
installations including city hall, police station, the University of Playa del Carmen (in which $3 million will be
expended) and a municipal cultural center. Grupo Ronac has the infrastructure contract for Superblocks 53 and
54. The firm has installed 375 miles of sewage system in Cancun, 125 miles in Playa del Carmen, and 37 miles in
Luís Donaldo Colosio.
This boom in the installation of infrastructure began in 1997 with the consytruction of the Cancún-Playa del
Carmen-Tulum freeway, which in combination with the other factors noted above had an explosive effect on
state development. Tourism, housing and commercial infrastructure development continue to grow so strongly
that construction is the state's second largest industry. The area's immense popularity among world tourists
guarantees a solid economy. Growth will continue for at least the next ten years in the construction sector based
on urban developments and immense new tourism megaprojects already underway.
