Socio-
demographics
Cancún and the Riviera Maya
are Mexico's fastest growing
cities, with annual population
increase rates of 13 percent
and 19 percent respectively,
compared with hardly three
percent nationally. Cancun is
the clearest demonstration
of the dizzying population
growth that is driving a
phenomenal demand for
housing and services.
The state council on population and land use calculated 800,000 inhabitants of Benito Juárez at the end of 2004.
Today, the figure is probably around 900,000. At 23 percent, the municipality of Solidaridad (Playa del Carmen)
has the nation's fastest rate of growth and is probably the fastest growing community in Latin America.
The population is predominantly urban - 95 percent. These are working people. Sixty-two percent of the
population is economically active, more than double the national rate of 29 percent.
